Abstract:

A survey of 192 Ecstasy users showed what they said were the positive effect of the illegal drug, including experiencing more loving and caring emotions, outweighed the negative, like loss of confidence, among people who had used it for up to five years.

[Phillip Murphy] cited previous research which showed a deterioration in the power of the memory among Ecstasy takers, although the longer- term impact was less clear.

Aging ravers beware. Research shows that the longer you use the drug Ecstasy for your kicks the fewer positive vibes you will get from it.

Scientists told the British Psychological Society this week that highs from the amphetamine-based stimulant do not outlast the lows.

"Over time, the positive effects that this drug represented diminished," said Phillip Murphy from Edge Hill College of Higher Education in Lancashire, England.

A survey of 192 Ecstasy users showed what they said were the positive effect of the illegal drug, including experiencing more loving and caring emotions, outweighed the negative, like loss of confidence, among people who had used it for up to five years.

After that point the first negative balance was registered.

"For the first five years, the positive outweighs the negative," Murphy said. "In the sixth year, the negative starts to win."

The survey also found that the longer people used Ecstasy the more tablets they tended to take and that males used it more than women.

The drug is commonly taken in night clubs and large-scale raves, or parties.

Murphy cited previous research which showed a deterioration in the power of the memory among Ecstasy takers, although the longer- term impact was less clear.

"The obvious message is to avoid the damage ... We do not know the long-term course."
